There is nothing quite like spring in the New Forest, the crisp frost on the grass, the peeking colours and new life all around. With the days getting longer and warmer there is no better time to visit the New Forest.

Carpets of bluebells

The long-awaited carpets of blue across the woodland floor make an appearance in April. Bluebells are an early spring flower and alongside daffodils are usually the first colours of spring.

There are many places in the New Forest to take a walk and enjoy the spectacular sight including;

Pondhead Inclosure – Southeast of Lyndhurst, spot deer and roaming stock amongst the bluebells

Furzey Gardens – located in Minstead, near Lyndhurst, Furzey Gardens is a 10-acre woodland where you can find bluebells and many other early spring flowers. Don’t forget to take your camera.

Explore on foot

There is so much of the New Forest countryside to see, exploring on foot is the best way to start. There are many walking trails to find including;

Burley Village Walk – this 4-mile walk starts in the middle of this lovely village before taking you in a circular route around the outskirts of Burley. On this 2-hour walk, there is a gentle incline on this walk and a great place to begin.

Bolderwood: Radnor Trail – is you’re looking for something more with nature, the Bolderwood Radnor Trail is a 2-mile circular route through this beautiful ancient woodland. You can stop at points on the trail where you can enjoy a spot of lunch and you can often spot fallow deer in the trees.

Lydhurst Parish Walk – as Pinewood Cottage is located in the village of Lydhurst, this is the easiest walking trail to get you started. This 8.5-mile walk will take you around the local surroundings so you can enjoy the beauty it has to offer. Plenty of places you can stop for refreshments along the way.

You may even be lucky enough to spot some of the newly born New Forest Pony foals.
